Blog 1 – Senior Final Lesson/Interview Reflection

1.  What three lessons were most helpful for you to see, and why?

The three lessons that I found most helpful where Avery's (Blacksmithing), Micah's (Film Production), and Jake's (Independent Film making).
Avery was the example of an amazing presentation filled with passion and knowledge. Micah's was the best example of good aesthetic throughout the presentation. She had an organized color pallet that carried to her wardrobe. Jake's was the example of when passion leads to mistakes. Jake used technical jargon because he's a filmmaker who forgot that not everyone knows what 5/8ths' of a script means.

2. List one thing that you learned about the senior project in interviews that will help you get off to a good start?

The seniors I interviewed both told me to do something I love. They spun tales about long nights doing research, near constant trips to the library, and frustrating mentors. Both of them agreed that it never really felt like work because they loved their topics. Passion makes the project not only worth wile, but also makes it good. You can tell the difference between someone who loved their topic and someone who picked out of convenience.

3. What topic(s) are you considering, and why?

I am considering makeup artistry for TV and film. I have a passion for film making and a passion for makeup, combining the two seemed logical. If that avenue turns out to be a dead end, I'm looking at film production.

4. What EQ do you think might be interesting to consider in guiding a project like this? (Please don't worry about any sort of formula...we want this question to come from your genuine interest).

How can a makeup artist make a look that is aesthetically pleasing and reads well on film? The challenge about doing makeup for any situation, is that it is heavily affected by it's surroundings. Lighting, camera, and the actor's face all play huge roles in the effectiveness of a look on film. On screen makeup must be believable, but still be able to be seen by the camera and it must suit the theme of the show. Learning about how a makeup artist is able to do this, and still make the finished piece look good, seems very interesting.

5. What are some ideas you have about finding summer mentorship?

Over the summer I am participating in several fashion shows for the American Cancer Society. During these events, makeup artists come to do the survivors makeup. I am going to take advantage of this and ask if they themselves are willing to take me on as an apprentice, or if they know those who would. I also intend to seek out independent film makeup artists and ask about a mentorship. I also have an aunt who works at Fox Studios, I am going to ask her if she could get me into the makeup department.
